about

In autumn 2020, on the heels of their spring 2020 release, “Isolation/Collaboration” (Enter the Circle, ETC-0030), and still unable to make music and drones in person due to continuing pandemic lockdowns, the New London Drone Orchestra endeavored to create more collaborative music in isolation.

Inspired by Pass It On, a concept Niko Serverino brought to the group at its last in-person session in February 2020, Orchestra member Tim Wolf proposed a new remote recording project similar to Niko’s piece, inspired by the children’s game of Telephone, where information is passed from one individual to the next with the content often changing and ending up quite different from what was heard at the beginning.

Nine members of the New London Drone Orchestra committed to recording solo tracks two to ten minutes in length in the mode D Dorian. Names of the players were randomly drawn to determine the order in which they would record. The first player submitted their recording, which was then shared with the second player. The second player listened to the first recording and made their recording in response to the first. The second player's recording was shared with the third player who responded in kind, and on down the line. With all recordings completed in just under two months, Tim took the sequential solo recordings and created two pieces, one a set of duets, the other a cumulative ensemble piece.

about

New London Drone Orchestra New London, Connecticut

A protean collective that manifests sustained, layered, gradually evolving, timeless sound.

“Aldous Huxley once said, ‘There is no shortcut to Nirvana.’ That may be true. The aural road trip that is the NLDO brings you at least to a scenic overlook. There at the cliffs’ edge is the moment when linear time yields to the liminal. It’s like a murmur of starlings for the ears.” — Ludent Tremmel
